Dwarf Fortress is a roguelike civilization simulator developed by Tarn and Zach Adams for over 20 years.
I (and many others) personally like it for its generative story telling. A lot happens in every Dwarf Fortress game and it's up to the player to find and interpret the story. I highly recommend it if you're into DnD or roguelikes, although the game has a very steep learning curve. Up until late 2022, Dwarf Fortress was a free keyboard-only ASCII game. The interface only made getting into the game more confusing but the Steam release (v50) of the game added graphics and a mouse interface. The game remains free with the new features but the graphics are exclusive to the "premium" version of the game.

My forts (that I remember):
Rockssears - A tale of a great warrior, mass genocides and a crawling headless zombie. This fort has been sort of documented on my DameDaNeSpace blog. I stopped writing because interesting things stopped happening, but if you want to know Olvex got killed by a demon near the end.
-
Hategrass - A tale of being stranded on an island, wealth and monsters. This fort was set on an island with almost no contact with rest of the world (although contact was eventually established). It was the first fortress in which I managed to obtain candy and make weapons and furniture out of it. Unfortunately mining too deep has its consequences.
Before its eventual end, the fortress was attacked by various nightmarish creatures. Some notable ones include the giant cave fire-breathing dimetrodon Nunur, the first beast that attacked and terrorized the caverns for months, until the military was let in to fight it and were all wiped out except for the militia commander Gard, one of the original 7 dwarves, who stood his ground even while his whole body was on fire and slayed the beast.
Another one was a parrot of ash that I forgot its name but it was guarding the candy deep underground and killing it was a 20 dwarf effort.
